You wouldn’t think that a four-cylinder SUV would earn the title of Tank, however I cannot think of a better nickname for my little silver explorer. Even at the high mileage that is expected from a 14 year old Honda, this little engine that could was able to climb the steep inclines and get me up the mountainous terrain I encountered on my latest road test.
By no means am I implying that I flew up Mount Whitney, but it got the job done in the Sequoia Forest. Tank and I explored high up looking for deforestation, and he handled every steep s-curve I could throw at him. The low gearing worked excellent. Every time I down shifted, the power was there to keep up the climb.
After 5000 feet and looking down steep cliffs, I was also happy with the stable frame that allowed me to corner well.
Unfortunately this road trip hit a snag and the campsite I had planned on staying at wasn't available. Tank was more than willing to shimmy right back down the grade, and made short order of the twisting road. Its surprisingly nimble for a car of its size, and was fun to plunge into corners and hit the apex on the downhill run. More than a few items went flying the cabin on the way back down.
Storage capacity has always been a big positive for this little SUV. It was able to hold my camping gear with ease and still got decent gas mileage.
All in all, my Honda impressed me once again out in the field. Its good handling and peppy motor have lasted a long time. I am truly looking forward to the next trip on Tank's reliable run.
